Game Length: 23:14 min
Thanks to farizganteng for linking me to this great game. This was a short game but as you’ll see, we get to learn a lot of tactics watching it.

Hard Carry Malaysians vs The Pusher Chinese

The Picks

This game, Aeon was clearly after the farm-2-win strategy with three hard-carries Traxex, Broodmother and Raijin. On the other hand, the first three picks by LGD were the general good heroes while the last two (Rexxar & Chen) focused on pushing as LGD realised that late game could bring them troubles. [One should notice 4 out of 5 Aeon bans consisted of pushers. :P ]

The Lanes

Aeon’s Laning Plan

- Storm is the most popular solo-mid out of the three carries and therefore the mid solo.

- Broodmother has a nice escape mechanism in the form of Web which means less chance to get killed in a gank therefore the most gank-prone (for Scourge) bot lane.

- The rest three, Traxex, Ryali and Tide get the top lane.

Tactic #1

When playing Broodmother, rush to your lane at game start and build a web as soon as possible because the cooldown for Web is high and you’ll need at least two webs to stay invisible throughout the length of your lane.

LGD’s laning plan

- Rexxar was the most popular mid-solo of the line-up and therefore the case. [There are reasons why these heroes are popular mid-solo but its better we discuss them separately rather than including in replay analysis.]

- Sending Alchemist solo bot is an unorthodox strat but they figured out that he won’t have many problems farming against a solo Brood while a tri-ranged-lane top would devastate Traxex.

- As the three ranged heroes get the top, one should notice Chen bringing Sentry to destroy observer wards which Aeon could’ve placed to hinder Neutral Creep spawns and/or to prevent him from ganking Raijin.

The Laning Phase

As LGD planned out, the laning phase did not go well for Aeon’s main carry Traxex, as her Creep stats at 5 min. game time were just 5/2.

Tactic #2

Use your tangoes to manipulate trees for your advantage. Check out the picture below...

This way through the forests was created by Tidehunter as an escape route but it can be used for harassing the Scourge heroes.
Everyone should note this tree cutting tactic on top lane as it is a simple and safe yet, highly effective strat for any Sentinel team to harass/kill the Scourge hero provided you ward the Scourge jungle. Also, consider reading this article on Manipulating Trees and Exploiting Spatial Advantage for more explanation of this tactic. And one more thing while using this strat, trees grow back every 5 mins (Min. 5, 10, 15...) so avoid being ‘into’ the trees at the moment trees grow back as you might get stuck.

Tactic #3

When playing Broodmother, use your spinderlings to jungle.

Although many might already be knowing this tactic, I hope every Broodmother player starts using it after watching this match. :)

The use of this tactic was all the more important in this game because the spinderlings in lane turned out to be a huge source of gold income for Alchemist who learned “Goblin’s Greed” as his first skill.

Alchemist's Skill Build
The Push

After taking out the top lvl1 tower, the Sentinel proceeded in groups (except ZSMJ-Alchemist) to push all lanes and end the game as quickly as possible. We can notice Rexxar taking a level of Inner Beat aura over Wild Axes for the same reason.

The first base push by LGD was totally unexpected by Aeon but there was nothing they could do about it as Tide, their only initiator wasn’t level 6 yet and they had no tank to give them a head start. Also, they didn’t have much required ranged AoE to kill the Sentinel creeps. As a result, the game ended before Aeon could even respond to the crisis situation.

A very nice game from LGD.

  1. More of a strategy guide than a replay analysis. Nice Work!

  2. very nice, two things.
    1. could you write an article on the details of the mid battle? i know there's quite a lot to be said about the complexities of solo mid, ie controlling the lane from level 1 by aggression, bottle battling, hero choices; so important that ehome would use tide to simply baby sit the mid hero at times
    2. what replay program do you use to obtain stats like the skill build etc
    thx!

  3. @deon

Do you want the mid-lane analysis for this particular game or as a general rule for all replays?

btw, I use Dota Replay Manager to obtain game stats.

  4. thx! thoght i posted by seems like the message didnt go through, the mid lane early game for general competitive dota if you could. its quite interesting, but goes unnoticed due to the ganking action through top and bottom, due to rise in popularity of tri lanes and such. but yeh, mid lane is actually quite intense, last hitting/using spells from lvl 1-3 to get cs in order to farm your bottle, rune racing, etc. would like to know more!
